How does EasyPASS work?
How do I proceed through border checks with EasyPASS?

Step 1 of 3: Our explanatory film guides you step by step through the eGate.
After you have placed your electronic passport (or German electronic ID card) angled (90 degrees) on the ID card reader and the document has been recognised, the entrance door to the control lane (eGate) opens. As soon as the entrance door closes, the electronic passport of the next traveller can already be put on and scanned.

Step 2 of 3: Facial image capture – look into the camera
After you have placed your electronic passport (or German electronic ID card) angled (90 degrees) on the ID card reader and the document has been recognised, the entrance door to the control lane (eGate) opens. As soon as the entrance door closes, the electronic passport of the next traveller can already be put on and scanned.

Step 3 of 3: Verification – Passing the border
As soon as the system has completed the check and you see the green arrow in the display, the exit door opens automatically and you can cross the border on your own. The Federal Police monitor the process. For queries or for reasons of due diligence for minors, for example, a follow-up check may be necessary, which is shown on the display with the symbol of a police officer. The border police officer will open the exit door manually in this case and ask you to come to the post-control workstation, directly behind the eGates.

Does EasyPASS also store people's entry and exit data?
The data collected during the check with EasyPASS is stored for 48 hours. In the context of police investigations, the storage period can be manually extended to a maximum of 30 days.

How does biometric face recognition work?
A programme determines the digital data of the live image, compares it with the data of the chip image and can thus determine whether the faces in the images match in individual characteristics.

Why face recognition and not fingerprint recognition?
Facial recognition has proven to be reliable. Moreover, the facial image is already stored in the chip of the biometric passport and the electronic identity card. Fingerprints have only been stored in the chip of passports since November 2007.
