General Information on Border Control
Information for all third-country nationals wishing to enter Germany
You are considered a third-country national if you do not hold a passport from one of the member states of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland

- A valid and recognized passport is required for the duration of your stay. The passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure from the territory of the Member States and must have been issued within the last ten years.
- If you are exempt from the visa requirement under Regulation (EC) No. 539/2001 (EU Visa Regulation), you do not need a visa for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
- You will need a visa if required under Regulation (EU) No. 2018/1806 (EU Visa Regulation). Fingerprints stored during the visa application will be electronically verified during border control.
- Further information on visa requirements can be found in the overview of visa requirements and exemptions for entry into the Federal Republic of Germany.
- For your short stay, you must provide evidence of the purpose and circumstances of your intended stay. Travelers must have sufficient financial means to cover their living expenses during their stay in the Schengen area and for their return to their country of origin and must be able to prove this during border control.
Instructions for border control:
